OFF-ISLAND LEAGUES

OPPORTUNITIES TO
REPRESENT YOUR ISLAND
What opportunities are available?

Depending on their age, local athletes have the opportunity to compete for Team IOM in two track and field leagues.

Why should athletes take part?

Athletes should participate in the Youth Development League (YDL) and Northern League because these competitions provide valuable experience and opportunities to develop skills and reach new performance levels.

The YDL is designed for young athletes (U13 and U15 age groups) and introduces them to competitive settings, helping them build confidence, discipline, and resilience. Competing alongside peers fosters camaraderie and a team spirit, offering structured pathways for long-term development in athletics.

The Northern League, aimed at U17 and older athletes, provides a higher level of competition and allows athletes to test themselves against some of the region’s best. It supports athletic progression by exposing participants to diverse events and challenging opponents.

Both leagues serve as stepping stones for athletes to sharpen their competitive edge, enhance their versatility, and gain experience that can open doors to future opportunities at higher levels.

*Note –there may be times where athletes will be required to compete in events they ordinarily may not compete in due to injuries/sickness on the day or unavailability of athletes for particular matches. With the exception of high jump and pole vault, athletes must compete in their selected events. The aim is to score the maximum number of points possible for the team at each match rather than based on individual performances. We will always try to put athletes in their strongest events when selecting the team.

Where possible, most trips will be via the ferry and then by coach once in the UK but there may be times where we will be required to fly.

Some matches will require an overnight stay, and suitable accommodation will be provided as close to the relevant venue where possible however, there may be occasions where accommodation may need to be further out of town.

Details of the above will be provided prior to the first match for all matches. Athletes are expected to travel with the team at all times. Due to the limited number of spaces on the coach, the travel is restricted to athletes and officials only.

Should parents wish to join their child at selected matches, they may do so at their own cost.

A selection committee, made up of nominated individuals from each clubs’ committees, will meet prior to each match to review potential athletes wishing to be considered for that match.

Selection will be based on a number of factors such as:
– Performance
– Commitment to training sessions
– Attitude and behaviour
– Entry into the IOMAA summer league competitions*

*Note – athletes who have not registered for the summer league, will not be eligible to compete in the YDL*

The team will be announced a minimum of two weeks prior to the next match as such, athletes will be required to make their availability known prior to the next match selection. A private Facebook group will be set up for the 2025 league and the Team Manager arrange a post requesting confirmation on the availability of each athlete prior to the match.

If you do not use Facebook, please make this known when registering interest so that any updates can be communicated using the appropriate method.

The maximum number of athletes that can compete per match is 40.

There are two teams – A & B teams, per match.

The costs for these trips are heavily subsidised by the IOMAA. The overall cost is divided by the 4 matches as such, the same amount will be applicable for each match.

A YDL Team Travel Policy & Code of Conduct form must be signed by all athletes and parents/guardians before travel.
